12:30 pm – Keynote: Satellite Constellations: Who Survives and Dies in the Battle for Multi-Orbit Supremacy?
1:15 pm – 2:00 pm – Satellite Industry 101: Speaking the Language of Commercial Space
LEO? GEO? What’s the difference between a terminal and an antenna? Confused by all the acronyms and engineering tech-speak of the space industry? Trying to understand satellite industry business models? You’re not alone! Even satellite industry veterans need a constant refresh on this constantly evolving industry. During this session, our speakers will provide attendees with the essential information that they need to understand modern satellite services and markets. We’ll also explain what makes the satellite industry stand out in the larger telecoms industry, as well as the financial, technological and policy milestones that are important to satellite operators.
2:15 pm – 3:15 pm – Do Satellite Services Compete with or Complement Terrestrial Wireless Networks at the Edge?
Satellite service providers have invested significant resources in enhancing connectivity from space over the past decade. Operators now boast the ability to go beyond backhaul – some saying they can provide 5G from space and even connect directly to smartphones. Do their ambitions to dominate last-mile service in rural and mobile markets put them on course to compete with terrestrial wireless carriers, or, does it transform them into potential partners to expand terrestrial networks through reseller agreements? This session aims to compare and contrast the performance, costs, and availability of modern satellite and terrestrial wireless services and explore whether increased convergence or competition is more likely between the two industries.
3:30 pm – Keynote: 5G from Space: Fact or Fiction?
4:15 pm – 5:00 pm – Bringing Space-Based IoT, Messaging, and Data Capabilities to Consumer Devices
This session brings wireless carriers and technology developers together to explain the value of adding satellite-powered services like emergency messaging, IoT, and space-based data to existing networks. Even before Apple and Andriod made recent headlines with their own satellite service integration, mobile carriers have been leveraging satellite spectrum to support low-bandwidth applications and create diverse, flexible hybrid networks. How will these partnerships and services evolve? What other capabilities can satellites bring to these networks in the future?
